Farm Road: #1

This is my first attempt. I used crappy paper, and it was a nightmare. First lesson was to bite the bullet, and use Arches. Second, I relied too heavily on the Masking fluid to preserve my whites. The chunky whites feel like a gimmick. I also relied fairly heavily on Ivory Black (I use Daniel Smith water colors because its what I bought.) The Ivory Black is super granulating, and very opaque. It gives me sharp darks, but none of the shadows consider the temperature of the surroundings, so it feels very flat. I also tried to incorporate far too many elements from the picture, and they all look half-assed, because… well they are. Im not good at this yet, so half-assed details + lack of skill makes it all look amateurish. Thats ok though, because I am an amateur.

The point here is to learn.

  1. Hi Im from Reddit and Im so glad I found your post and your website!

I had a hard time improving my skills cause I dont paint that often and I tend to forget my thoughts after each painting. Now I realized I learn a lot easier with write-ups for myself and from others. Cant thank you enough!

P/s. Im still exploring this site and this 31-day same scenery seems like an amazing way to start practicing!

    1. Thanks for stopping by! I definitely recommend the paint the same thing over and over approach – it helps me learn a lot. And I highly recommend journaling as you go if you have the time. Its incredibly helpful.
